Tulsi To Vasaka, 5 Ayurvedic Herbs That Help With Respiratory Problems In Winter

Tulsi

One of the most commonly available plants in the majority of Indian households is Tulsi.

While many worship it, this plant also has many medicinal purposes as well. Such are its properties that it is also known to be a panacea during winters. The plant contains Vitamin C, Calcium, Magnesium, antioxidants and zinc which boosts immunity. It also has anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties which helps in proper blood circulation and flow in the lungs. Add crushed tulsi leaves to your regular tea or make a kadha using this aid in breathing.

Liquorice Roots

Liquorice Roots also known as Mulethi is excellent in fighting off viruses and getting rid of congestion. It is great for the liver as well as for digestion. It is important to note that too much intake of it can cause high blood pressure. It is one of the classic ayurvedic remedies for cough and sore throat. It is loaded with nutrients like vitamins, potassium, flavonoids, biotin, resins, sucrose, iodine and much more. For respiratory issues boil a few mulethi sticks in water and sip this kadha several times a day. You can also chew on the roots to address sore throat problems. For a blocked nose, boil the root with tulsi leaves and mint. Drink it by adding a teaspoon of honey.

Pippali

Pippali is a great herb to manage colds and coughs. It is known to offer relief from headaches and congestion because of the cold. Pippali loosens mucus and helps in coughing it out which allows one to breathe properly. It contains certain compounds that have anti-asthmatic properties. It is also great for managing bronchial asthma in children and relieves breathlessness. Take a pinch of pippali churna and swallow it with a teaspoon of honey. Repeat this once or twice a day.

Kalmegh

Kalmegh, also known as Green Chiretta and the King of Bitters, is used for various medicinal purposes. While it is excellent for liver problems, its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties boost immunity and help manage the symptoms of the common cold, sinusitis and allergies due to its antimicrobial. Take kalmegh along with honey as it is extremely bitter.

Vasaka

Vasaka also known as ‘Malabar Nut’ in English can help alleviate respiratory problems. The plant has curative properties for breathing trouble, cough, cold, nasal congestion, sore throat, asthma, bronchitis and other upper respiratory tract infections. Due to its anti-inflammatory, antibiotic and expectorant properties, Vasaka is excellent in treating common cold, cough and flu symptoms. It also reduces chest and nasal congestion and stops nasal discharge. Prepare a decoction of Vasaka leaves by boiling them in water and adding a spoonful of honey. Bring this drink.
