India is renowned for its abundant natural biodiversity, a major draw for tourists worldwide. In recent times, the southern part of the country has been gaining prominence in India’s tourism sector. Similarly, the Mada Forest in the East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh has become a significant attraction. Situated approximately 45 km from Kakinada on the Kakinada Yanam Road within the Coringa Sanctuary, Mada Forest earned its status as a wildlife sanctuary through a declaration by the state government. Spanning an expansive 52,000 acres, half of this area is submerged in water, while the other half is adorned with lush green trees. The forest has been developed as a tourist destination, showcasing the region’s natural beauty, thanks to efforts by forest authorities and state governments.
Ranked as the third largest mangrove forest in India, Mada Forest boasts 24 mangrove tree species and hosts over 120 bird species. Among its inhabitants are endangered species such as white-backed vultures and long-billed vultures. To enhance the tourist experience, authorities have constructed a wooden bridge that spans several kilometres, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the diverse flora and fauna the forest offers. Bulletin boards along the bridge provide information about the birds that frequent the area, including details about their dietary habits, encouraging tourists to contribute to the well-being of endangered bird species. The entry fee for this natural wonder is Rs 50, offering affordable access to the mesmerizing surroundings.
Visitors also have the option to explore the forest through boating, providing an alternative perspective on the rich ecosystem. Notable bird species in the area include Pond Heron, Pied Kingfisher, Small Blue Kingfisher, Little Egret, Cattle Egret, Sandpiper, and Red Shank. The forest is also home to a fair population of golden jackals, sea turtles, and fishing cats, adding to the overall allure of this ecological treasure.
