Easy Hacks To Beat Any Addiction – From Sugar To Smoking

Being addicted to something can be truly distressing and psychologically challenging. According to experts, the effects of certain things on your brain can make it extremely hard to avoid them.

Addiction to junk food, sugar, smoking, or alcohol is very strong, and many people find it difficult to control themselves – no matter how hard they try. Despite not wanting to, they may repeatedly find themselves with large amounts of unhealthy cravings and dependence – knowing that doing so may cause harm.

However, since change is difficult, it is useful to have a guide when attempting to kick an addiction to drugs, alcohol, or behaviour. Research shows that the following a few easy steps can help you move toward your recovery goals.

Ways to get over an addiction

Even though it may be hard to let go without seeing an expert, there are a few steps you can take to relieve yourself from the hold that addiction can have over you.

Studies say it can take a while for someone to overcome an addiction, but if they work on themselves daily and stay away from the addiction it can take six to 12 months.

A few easy hacks to follow include:

Own up and act

According to experts, it is very important to first admit that you are battling a serious issue since most people are scared to even acknowledge it.

Many people think there is a lot of shame that comes with being an ‘addict’ and it means you must actually deal with the problem which in someone’s eyes is often the solution to their problems.

According to Harvard Health, many times you may not be able to deal with a situation the way you want to, and the most comforting thing is to overcome the guilt. For example, if you are stressed or under pressure, you may turn to sugar as a relief, when this is the thing, you may be trying to turn away from it.

Change your environment

Remove any reminders of your addiction from your home and workplace.

For example, separate from those who would encourage you to be involved with the object of your addiction, be it drugs, alcohol, or even your behavior. If you are trying to quit drinking, get rid of any alcohol, bottle openers, wine glasses, and corkscrews. If trying to get away from gambling, remove any playing cards, scratch tickets, or poker chips.

Also, do not let other people use or bring reminders of addiction-related substances or behaviour into your home.

Distract yourself

Instead of giving in to an urge to use, try to find some alternative activities like going for a long walk or calling a friend or family member to talk. It will not just help you become strong mentally but will also keep you busy as the urge passes.

Be prepared to deal with things that trigger your cravings, like being in an environment where others are using.

Maintain

Staying away from your addiction and avoiding your triggers is not at all easy, but to overcome it you must maintain distance. Experts believe that it is very easy to go back to old behaviours, environments, and ways and that is when you end up being in a vulnerable position.

Also, be prepared to face challenges and issues and always remember to have action and prevention plans in place. Make sure to write your daily affirmations in a journal along with quotes that help you stay positive and daily reminders on your phone that help you stay on track.
