Glide Into Your Golden Years With These Anti-Agieng Exercises

For both the young and old, maintaining a healthy lifestyle by incorporating physical activity, proper nutrition, and sufficient sleep is essential.

However, as we age, staying physically active becomes even more difficult to glide into the golden years looking and feeling great.

In today’s fast-paced world, it can be challenging for many, including older adults, to achieve even minimal levels of cardio activity because of the environment we live.

What is Healthy Aging?

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines healthy ageing as “the process of developing and maintaining the functional ability that enables well-being in older age.”

Functional ability refers to the capabilities that allow individuals to engage in activities they value. This includes a person’s ability to:

  • Meet basic needs;
  • Learn, grow, and make decisions;
  • Be mobile;
  • Build and maintain relationships; and
  • Contribute to society.

To maintain these abilities and meet the demands of healthy ageing, such as fulfilling basic needs and sustaining meaningful relationships, regular and moderate exercise becomes crucial. It offers mental benefits while improving overall physical health.

Three exercises to glide into your golden years

Nature Walks: If your parents or grandparents have been sedentary, using age as an excuse, now is the time to educate them on the importance of staying active and encourage them to take at least a morning or evening walk. A mindful walk can reduce the risk of heart attacks, strengthen muscles and bones, and improve sleep quality.

Yoga: Do you notice your elderly parents or grandparents struggling with balance while walking or performing daily activities? Yoga has been proven effective for seniors looking to improve their balance. Chair yoga and tree pose are particularly beneficial for enhancing flexibility, balance, and endurance.

Cycling: If they know how to cycle, it’s another excellent exercise for promoting healthy ageing. Cycling not only provides an enjoyable way to connect with nature but also strengthens muscles and increases flexibility.
