Is Your Paneer For ‘Real’? Find Out With These Effective Testing Tips

What’s consumed as the Indian cottage cheese aka paneer is a south Asian food staple, which is in high demand annually, however there are rising concerns linked with lingering doubts among consumers, who are unsure whether they are eating the real deal.

Knowing how to identify authentic paneer is crucial. Here are five effective methods to distinguish real paneer from fake.

Check the texture

Authentic paneer is soft and crumbly, easily breaking apart when pressed gently. In contrast, synthetic paneer often feels hard and rubbery. A simple test is to press a piece with your finger; if it crumbles, it’s likely genuine. If it remains dense and intact, it’s a sign of a synthetic product.

Assess the colour

Real paneer has a pale white hue, while synthetic versions tend to appear overly bright due to added chemicals. An easy way to test this is by placing a small piece on a white paper towel. If it leaves a stark white residue, it’s likely fake.

Smell the paneer

Fresh paneer should have a mild, milky aroma, reminiscent of natural yogurt. If the paneer has a strong or artificial smell, it may contain added chemicals. Sniff a small piece to gauge its freshness; a sour odor often indicates a synthetic product.

Conduct the water test

This simple method can quickly reveal the authenticity of your paneer. Drop a small piece into warm water; genuine paneer will maintain its shape, while fake paneer may dissolve or disintegrate.

Examine the packaging

Real paneer is typically sold in blocks or cubes. If you encounter shredded or powdered forms, be cautious. Check the packaging for additives and preservatives, as these often indicate a synthetic product.
