7 Ayurvedic Home Remedies To Boost Eye Health

Mobile phones, laptops, televisions, and other devices have become integral parts of our lives. This increased reliance has exposed our eyes to harmful radiation. Prolonged screen exposure can lead to various symptoms of eye strain, such as headaches, dry eyes, dark circles and vision issues like myopia and hyperopia. The unnatural light emitted from LED and TFT screens not only strains our eyes but also disrupts pituitary hormones and neurotransmitters, significantly impacting our sleep cycle. This, in turn, hinders cognitive function and results in stress and anxiety.

But do you know Ayurveda offers a treasure trove of remedies to nurture and protect our eyes as it considers them as a seat of pitta dosha which needs proper care, cooling and lubrication regularly? Practising these simple yet effective practices alleviates eye-related problems.

  1. Washing Eyes With Cold Water: Splashing your eyes with cold water regularly in the morning works wonders for your vision. This practice helps remove mucous and dirt that accumulates in the eyes. The cool exposure is beneficial as it stimulates the glands that lubricate the eyes, promoting the overall eye health.
  2. Avoid Using Harsh Products: Conventional beauty products for eyes such as eyeliner, kajal, mascara, etc. are loaded with harsh chemicals. To avoid any harm to your eyes, consider using an Ayurvedic kajal or medicinal eyeliner. These alternatives not only enhance your attractiveness but also nourish and protect your eyes.
  3. Regular Head Massage: Massaging your head improves blood circulation and relaxes the eye muscles to stimulate the tear glands. You can massage your head using coconut oil or essential oils.
  4. Palming The Eyes: Rub your palms together briskly for 10 seconds to generate warmth then gently cup them over your closed eyes. Be careful not to apply pressure to the eyeballs. Relax in this position for 2-3 minutes breathing deeply. Try to repeat this exercise every 30 minutes especially if you spend a lot of time working on screens. This will help reduce eye strain and provide a much-needed break for your eyes.
  5. Avoid Sun Exposure: While outside, try to stay in the shade to avoid direct exposure to sun rays. You can wear a hat or protective glasses if you have to stay outdoors for long hours.
  6. Choose A Diet To Soothe Pitta: To balance Pitta dosha and promote eye health, incorporate cooling and nourishing foods into your diet, such as cucumbers, coconut water, leafy greens and sweet fruits like grapes and melons.
  7. Triphala Eye Wash: A traditional and easy eye ritual involves using Triphala tea to maintain healthy eyes. Prepare the tea with one teaspoon of Triphala powder in water. Let it cool and filter it afterwards. Now, use this solution cold in an eye bath cup for 5-7 minutes on both sides to relieve dry eyes, redness and irritation.
