Savour The Taste Of South India With This Homemade Vengaya Kuzhambu, Onion Gravy, Recipe

Tired of your kids asking you to prepare new dishes for them every other day? Well, you can try out this easy-to-make small onion Recipe which your kids will love. Vengaya Kuzhambu, as it is called in Tamil, is a tasty gravy preparation made of small onions.

Don’t have small onions at home? No need to worry, you can use normal onions too.

Here, we’ve mentioned all the items you need to prepare this gravy and its preparation method.

Ingredients:

  1. Oil – 1/4th
  2. Small Onions- 20
  3. Tomatoes- 3 to 4
  4. Tamarind Juice – 4 tbsp
  5. Water – As per requirement
  6. Salt – to taste
  7. Sugar or Jaggery – 1tbsp
  8. Chillies – 6 to 8
  9. Tuvaram Dal or referred to as Toor Dal – 2 tbsp
  10. Uruttu dal or referred to as Urad dal – 2 tbsp
  11. Fenugreek seeds (Methi)- 1 tbsp
  12. Cumin (Jeera) – 1tbsp
  13. Asparagus powder – 1/2 tsp
  14. Mustard Seeds- ½ tbsp.
  15. Curry Leaves
  16. Turmeric Powder

How to prepare this Onion gravy? Follow these steps:

Step 1: Take a pan and let it heat for some time.

Step 2: Once it’s heated, add Fenugreek seeds, Mustard seeds, Chillies and Cumin and roast them till they get brown and a nice aroma emanates from them.

Step 3: Keep them aside and let the spices cool for some time.

Step 4: Next up, put the spices into a mixer grinder and add peeled small onions to it.

Step 5: Grind them well till a thick paste is formed.

Step 6: Take the same pan add 1 tbsp of oil and once heated, add some small onions and curry leaves.

Step 7: Saute them till the onion gets translucent in colour.

Step 8: Add chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder and salt to the onions. Cook until tomatoes turn soft and tender.

Step 9: Next up, once the tomatoes turn soft, add the onion paste and mix well.

Step 10: Then add some tamarind water and stir it well.

Step 11: Add some sugar or jaggery for a little sweetness.

Step 12: Cover the gravy for 10-15 minutes and let it boil until the oil separates.

Step 13: And your Small Onion Gravy is ready.

Step 14: Serve hot

This lip-smacking gravy tastes best with rice.
