Many people require a mug of steaming hot coffee to start their day because the caffeine helps beat laziness and prepare for the planned activities. While some people love their coffee with a spoonful of sugar, others choose water instead of milk. But now there is a new variant, with some mixing butter or ghee into black coffee. Yep, you heard it right!

This high-calorie beverage, sometimes referred to as bulletproof coffee or just bullet coffee, is consumed by many people to induce ketogenesis, which aids the body in burning fats when carbs are not present.

Bullet coffee, which is often hailed as an excellent pre-workout beverage, has grown in favour among celebrities. However, is it safe for diabetics to take this morning’s energy boost?

This high-fat beverage is usually made with coffee, medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil and unsalted butter. Bullet coffee, which is often consumed by people on ketogenic diets, offers a rapid energy boost despite consuming very few carbohydrates. However, many health experts have warned against its use by diabetics. Dr Kamaljit Singh Kainth, consultant physician, PGP (Diabetology) told Indian Express that bullet coffee is not advised for people with diabetes.If it is consumed in place of a full meal, the primary dangers for diabetics are weight gain, elevated harmful cholesterol, and vitamin shortages. Additionally, she claimed that because the drink doesn’t provide a full meal, consumers may not get enough vital nutrients unless they balance it with other foods.

Bulletproof coffee has a limited amount of micronutrients. Although grass-fed butter is the highest-quality fat utilised in bulletproof coffee, it provides very little nutritional value in comparison to what any good breakfast can deliver.

Furthermore, the unregulated use of bullet coffee can elevate cholesterol levels brought on by its fat content.

It is thus recommended, especially for the Indian population where the consumption of oil, ghee and butter is already on the higher side, to stick to a well-balanced and healthy diet, instead of going after such internet famed poor diet substitutes, with little scientific credibility or proven evidence of positive outcomes. If you already have high cholesterol or diabetes, you must avoid bullet coffee or consume it in limited amounts after consulting your healthcare professional.
