Just an hour’s drive from Kochi Airport, Fort Kochi is a water-bound town also known as Old Kochi. As you stroll through the winding streets, you’ll be transported to a bygone era. The Portuguese, Dutch, and British colonial influences are evident in the architecture, churches, and synagogues of the town.

Beyond its historical significance, Fort Kochi is a haven for art and culture enthusiasts. The town boasts numerous antique shops, art galleries, and cultural centers. You can witness traditional art forms and explore the local markets for unique souvenirs.

You can also take a leisurely boat ride through the tranquil backwaters, admiring the lush greenery and traditional houseboats, or simply relax on the beach, and enjoy the gentle lapping of the waves. During your visit, do not miss the mouth-watering street food in its most authentic form.

Having said that here is a list of things you can do in the beautiful town:

Visit Santa Cruz Basilica: Located on Bastian Street, this church is one of the eight basilicas in Kerala and one of the oldest Catholic Churches in India. Built originally by the Portuguese in the late 19th century, Santa Cruz Basilica is an architectural gem featuring stunning interiors with beautiful paintings and a gothic-style facade.

  1. Maritime Museum: If you are interested in knowing the history of the Indian Navy, this place is for you. Explore the Navy warships, antique pistols, and aircraft carriers here. There is also a special section dedicated to post-independence naval victories, including the Junaghad Operation, the Indo-Pak Conflicts of 1965 and 1971, Operation Cactus, the Goa Liberation, Operation Pawan, and the strategic manoeuvres during the Kargil War.
  2. St. Francis Church: Originally built in 1503, St. Francis Church is well-known as the first church Europeans built in India. This place holds great historical significance and has served as a Roman Catholic church, a Dutch Reformist church, and an Anglican church depending on the European nation in power at each given time! Moreover, this place is also the burial place of the Portuguese explorer Vasco Da Gama, whose remains were later moved to Lisbon.
  3. Get drenched in the Athirappilly Falls: How can we not mention the Bahubali Falls in your Fort Kochi itinerary? It is the largest waterfall in Kerala, standing tall at 80 feet, and is about an hour and a half from Fort Kochi. Hop to this place with your friends and take a glimpse of the scenic flora and fauna. Immerse yourself in nature with the waterfall drenching all its visitors.
  4. Discover the Mattancherry Palace: Also called the Dutch Palace, this palace was built by the Portuguese in 1555 as a gift to the Kochin Raja. Later, it was built in the traditional Kerala Nalukettu style with a central courtyard. The rooms and bedchambers inside are adorned with stunning Kerala murals depicting Hindu temple art and scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The palace also includes some beautiful portraits of former Kochin Rajas executed in a Western style.
  5. Take a glimpse of the Chinese Fishing nets: It is believed that a famous Chinese explorer introduced the Chinese fishing nets to the fishermen in Kochi over 500 years ago. Over the years, this has evolved into a staple method of fishing. The Chinese fishing nets, or Cheenvala for the locals, have long attracted visitors, especially during sunset. Take a 2-minute walk from Hotel Forte Kochi to Vasco da Gama Square to get the perfect view of these massive structures.
  6. Jewish Synagogue: This place is also known for being home to Jew Town, a historic Jewish settlement. The Cochin Jewish community or Malabar Yehudans built this synagogue in 1568.
