Should Chia Seeds Be Soaked Overnight Before Consumption? Well, No!

Chia seeds can be effective for people battling with digestive issues. Rich in fibre, omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants, these seeds can also aid in lowering blood pressure and improving blood sugar control. Native to Mexico and Guatemala, Chia seeds come in a smooth, shiny texture. Thanks to their high water-absorbing power, people mostly use chia seeds in a gel form to prepare yoghurt, pudding and smoothies. They need to be soaked in water or milk to turn into a gel-like texture. Those who have chia seeds in their regular diet mostly soak them overnight. This much time, however, is not required for the seeds to soften.

People may not always get the chance to soak chia seeds overnight. In those situations, these black seeds can be kept in milk or water only for 10-15 minutes to achieve a similar result. For one tablespoon of chia seeds, three tablespoons of liquid is needed. Both have to be stirred well to let the seeds form a gel-like texture in just 10-15 minutes.

Chia seeds consist of soluble fibre, which breaks quite easily in contact with hot water or milk. In case of a quick soak, the seeds may remain a bit crunchy but will expand enough for easy digestion. This gel can be used to prepare oatmeal, yoghurt and smoothies.

For the chia seeds to become softer, they need to be soaked for at least 30 minutes and the upper limit is two hours. Its texture will become fuller and this thick gel can be added into pudding. Chia seeds are also used as a substitute for eggs by many. These people mostly love to have the seeds in a crunchy form. Overnight soak will lead the seeds to become very soft.

To speed up the soaking process, chia seeds can be kept in warm water or milk. The seeds will absorb the liquid faster and ten minutes will be enough to create the gel. Stirring is a must as it helps each seed expand properly and have access to the liquid. If the texture becomes too soft, more seeds can be added to get the desired thickness.

Dry chia seeds, however, should not be consumed directly. They can absorb water from the digestive tract and may lead to bloating and discomfort in the stomach. To have an additional flavour, chia seeds can also be soaked in almond milk, coconut water or juices.
