Tesla Model 3 becomes best selling premium sedan in Q1 2021

The adoption of electric cars in the world would have been at a nascent stage if it weren’t for Tesla. The American carmaker made the world take note of electric cars as viable alternatives to internal combustion engine-based vehicles, thanks to Tesla cars’ long range and exciting performance. Of course, Tesla cars aren’t selling as much as other premium cars in the world because people are still wary of switching to EVs. But it looks like things have started to change on a global level. According to Tesla, its Model 3 was the best selling premium sedan in the world between January 2021 and March 2021, comfortably beating the likes of Mercedes-Benz C-Class, BMW 3 Series, and Audi A4.

The American electric car maker released some facts a few days ago according to which it sold 1.2 lakh units of Model 3 in the first quarter of 2021, which is way more than its rivals. The company also sold over 60,000 units of Model Y. The biggest reason behind these impressive sales figures is Tesla’s Gigafactory in Shanghai that helped the brand ramp up productions and deliver the electric cars on schedule.

Now, Model 3 is the company’s entry-level offering and is a cash cow for the brand. This electric car will also be the first Tesla car to be launched in India later this year. The Model 3 is powered by a lithium-ion battery with dual electric motors. The standard model offers a driving range of 402.3 km/charge and can go from zero to 96.56 km/h in 5.3 seconds. Tesla Model 3 Long Range AWD variant, however, can offer a range of almost 518 km on a single charge and can sprint from zero to 96.56 km/h in 4.4 seconds.

The Model 3 also has a Performance variant but we seriously doubt if that will be offered in India. And as for the charging time, Tesla Superchargers can juice up Model 3’s battery to cover 281 km in 15 minutes. But a standard charging point is likely to take around 20 hours to completely charge the battery while a 7 kW charger could do so in around 8.5 hours.
