Tired Of Melasma? Know Its Causes And The Remedies

In today’s world, skin issues are increasingly prevalent, affecting every second person. Various factors like pollution, excessive heat and more contribute to various skin problems. One such condition is Melasma, characterised by a change in skin colour to brown. Brown patches often appear on the cheeks, forehead, nose, or upper lip in individuals affected by Melasma.

Let’s explore some common causes of Melasma:

Hormones: Hormonal changes are a significant factor in Melasma development. Fluctuations in hormones like estrogen and progesterone can lead to increased melanin production in the body. Postmenopausal women may develop Melasma due to progesterone treatment.

Genetic Factors: Melasma can also have a genetic component. It is more prevalent among women, with around 50% of individuals with the disorder having a family history of Melasma.

Sunlight Exposure: Prolonged exposure to sunlight can exacerbate Melasma. Sunlight stimulates melanocytes to produce more melanin, resulting in skin darkening and increased pigmentation.

Treating Melasma with Home Remedies:

Lemon Juice: Lemon juice contains citric acid, which aids in pigmentation removal and lightening dark spots. Apply lemon juice to the affected area and leave it for a few minutes before rinsing off with water. Regular application can gradually fade the spots.

Aloe Vera: Aloe vera possesses soothing properties that reduce redness associated with Melasma. Apply aloe vera gel directly to the dark spots, leaving it on for 20-30 minutes before washing off with water. Aloe vera gel provides a refreshing sensation and helps lighten the spots over time.

Apple Cider Vinegar: Apple cider vinegar helps maintain pH balance and prevent bacterial growth. Mix equal parts of apple cider vinegar and water, apply the solution to the affected area using a soaked cloth or cotton ball, leave it for a few minutes, then rinse off with water.

Sun Protection: Sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher is recommended to prevent Melasma from worsening. Apply sunscreen every two hours when outdoors, ensuring to cover the affected areas of the skin adequately.

By incorporating these home remedies and practising sun protection measures, individuals can effectively manage Melasma and minimise its impact on their skin health.
