What Is Atlantic Diet And How Does It Help You Keep Healthy?

The internet is abuzz with a new eating plan, being touted as among the healthiest diets in the world. The Atlantic diet is not only great for weight loss but is also said to promote balanced cholesterol levels, which most people look for today.

Studies and experts across the world say the Atlantic diet is similar to the Mediterranean diet – which is known for its long-term sustainability and weight management.

A study published in the JAMA Network Open highlighted the benefits of the Atlantic diet following the journey of 200 Spanish families who undertook this diet for six months.

After the time period ended, the participants reported better cholesterol levels, blood pressure, fasting glucose levels, and body weight. It was observed that the people following this diet plan had lower chances of developing metabolic syndrome. 1

What does the Atlantic diet incorporate?

According to CNN, the Atlantic diet consists of traditional foods that are popular in northern Portugal and northwestern Spain – also known as the Southern European region.

Many studies conducted in Europe have said this diet has immense health benefits which include a lower risk of dying early from cancer, or heart disease. Apart from that it also helps reduce the belly fat that raises the risk of coronary heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and other serious health conditions.

Foods incorporated into Atlantic diet include:

  • Fresh fish – particularly cod
  • A little red meat and pork products
  • Dairy
  • Legumes
  • Fresh vegetables
  • Potatoes
  • Whole-grain bread
  • Moderate wine consumption

While the Mediterranean diet is mostly plant-based, the Atlantic diet incorporates meats, fish, and other non-vegetarian foods as well. Even though red meat is used sparingly, it helps flavour a dish. Eating healthy, oily fish, which are packed with omega-3 fatty acids, is encouraged, while eggs, dairy, and poultry are eaten in much smaller portions than in the traditional Western diet.

Also, the Atlantic diet focuses on home-cooked food served family style, with an emphasis on social interactions between friends and family. Mindful eating, socializing over meals, and daily walking or biking provide the foundation of the Mediterranean diet – considered as or more important than the foods consumed.

Health benefits of the Atlantic diet

A few major benefits of following the Atlantic diet include:

Lowers metabolic syndrome

According to studies, regularly following the Atlantic diet reduces metabolic syndrome – a group of five conditions that puts an individual at a higher risk of heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and health conditions. The five risk factors include high blood glucose, low levels of good cholesterol, obesity, high blood pressure, and high levels of bad cholesterol.

Research says sticking to the Atlantic diet for three years produced a 14 per cent lower risk of early death from any cause over 10 years in adults over age 60. .

Promotes heart health

Whole foods, fatty fish, and olive oil are major parts of the Atlantic diet that are great for your heart health as they help lower cholesterol, blood pressure, and triglycerides.

Promotes weight loss

For those looking to lose weight in a healthy manner, the Atlantic diet helps sustainably achieve the goal.
