The latest home decor trend making waves on TikTok and Instagram is “fridgescaping,” where the focus shifts from decorating the outside of the refrigerator to enhancing its interior.
This emerging trend transforms ordinary fridge spaces into aesthetically pleasing environments, incorporating items like flowers, framed photos, and even beauty products alongside typical groceries.
How are creators making their fridge stand out?
Fridgescaping is gaining traction as users showcase their creatively organized fridge interiors. Unlike traditional fridge organization, which emphasizes functional and neat arrangement, fridgescaping adds a decorative touch. This trend includes elements such as decorative jars and curated items, making the fridge’s interior both practical and visually appealing.
The term “fridgescaping” was coined by Kathy Perdue, a retired design consultant from Brentwood, California, in a 2011 blog post. Perdue’s approach involved organizing everyday food items into pretty containers to create a more enjoyable fridge experience. Her original concept focused on functional aesthetics, without the added decorative elements seen today.
In the name of fridgescaping
In recent years, fridgescaping has evolved significantly. Ellen Marie Bennett, founder of Hedley & Bennett and host of “Kitchen Glow Up,” notes that different levels of fridge organization can be considered fridgescaping. Social media has further propelled this trend, with users posting videos of ornate and curated fridge interiors, sparking a wave of similar content.
North Carolina creative Allison Hester recounts her fascination with fridgescaping after seeing a video featuring an orchid and aesthetic jars in a fridge. “It just lit up my dopamine centers,” she says. Since then, Hester and other content creators have gained attention for their uniquely styled fridge interiors.
While fridgescaping adds a fun and personalized touch to kitchen spaces, its practicality remains debated. Nonetheless, it highlights the growing trend of incorporating personal style into every corner of the home.
