As we thrive in an entirely inter-connected world, air passengers have subscribed to routines to pass the long hours on international flights.
These range from binge-watching shows and listening to music to catching up on the latest news and snacking on in-flight meals. However, a new trend known as “rawdogging” is gaining traction, overshadowing many established in-flight habits.
What is rawdogging in-flight?
Traditionally a slang term for unprotected sex, “rawdogging” in the context of air travel refers to boarding a plane without any of the usual preparations or comforts. This means no entertainment, no snacks, and no reliance on typical distractions.
Despite seeming counterintuitive in an age of constant stimulation, thanks to our smartphones, this minimalist approach is being embraced by a growing number of TikTokers. Primarily young men are documenting their experiences of enduring long flights-ranging from 7 to 11 hours-without any distractions.
This trend even extends to refusing complimentary food and beverages, and ignoring in-flight entertainment, unless on low-cost carriers like IndiGo, Ryan Air, and Spirit Airlines. For airlines like Air Arabia, which do not provide free water, this practice becomes even more pronounced.
Meditative or misguided
While some find rawdogging flights to be a meditative experience, allowing for deep self-reflection. For individuals with anxiety or overthinking tendencies, the lack of distraction can exacerbate their symptoms.
Proponents argue that sitting with one’s thoughts can lead to greater self-awareness and emotional clarity, akin to the benefits of therapy. They claim it fosters heightened introspection and provides a unique opportunity for extended problem-solving and reflection.
The debate continues
The rawdogging trend poses both potential benefits and significant risks. For some, it can serve as an intensive mindfulness exercise, potentially reducing stress and anxiety in the long term. For others, particularly those with pre-existing mental health concerns, it may prove detrimental.
