Why You Must Add Gooseberry To Your Winter Diet

Gooseberry aka Amla is considered to be a super fruit that is packed with Vitamin C. These round and bright yellowish-green coloured fruits are sour and can enhance many recipes, just with their mere addition. Due to its high mineral content, it is quite beneficial to add it to the everyday diet, especially in winter. Gooseberries have been used for various remedies for at least 1,000 years and may help in improving your overall health. These are incredibly healthy foods to add to the winter diet. Drink gooseberry juice, pickles or candies as it can boost immunity, promote health and provide relief from colds and coughs. Here are a few reasons why you must add gooseberries to your diet.

Relief from cold and flu

During the winter season, many people suffer from colds and flu. It can increase the risk of heart attacks, spike blood pressure and cause respiratory problems as well. Gooseberries can help in curbing this.

Improves heart health

Gooseberries are rich in antioxidant properties which boosts heart health and aids in keeping the blood pressure levels under control. It is also effective against liver damage.

Strengthens immunity system

The Vitamin C content in the gooseberry strengthens the immune system and prevents flu and other infections during the winter season. It also helps in keeping the lungs and respiratory system functional.

Instead of eating its candies, try to drink gooseberry juice made at home. It is safe and free of chemicals or colours and will be extremely beneficial for health. Drink the juice on an empty stomach for maximum benefits. You can also eat one or two gooseberries every morning. But make sure you do not eat more than two as high vitamin C content can lead to constipation.

This fruit is also known to keep you hydrated throughout the day. If you cannot eat it raw due to its sour taste, you can slice up the fruit, and eat it with salt and chilli powder.

While it is considered to be healthy, it is best to avoid it after heavy meals due to the acidic nature of the fruit. If you have undergone surgery, you should consult a doctor before consuming gooseberries. Also, pregnant and lactating women can avoid this fruit.
